About Wilder Learning

Wilder Learning North Durham is a nonprofit, alternative elementary school in Port Perry. We offer a hands-on, nature-based education for children ages 2–12, grounded in child development, curiosity, and real-world learning.

We believe childhood shouldn’t be rushed. Learning works best when children feel safe, known, and deeply engaged—and when education grows from who they are, not who they’re expected to be.

Our Philosophy

We start with the child, not the curriculum.

We know that children are naturally driven to learn. When learning meets them where they are—developmentally, emotionally, and intellectually—they stay curious, capable, and motivated.

At Wilder, we take time to truly know each child. Learning unfolds at a pace that respects development, with guidance that supports growth without rushing it.

How We Approach Learning

Our approach brings together the strengths of several educational traditions.

Our teachers draw from Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and Waldorf pedagogies alongside evidence-based literacy and hands-on math practices. These methods guide our work, but are used flexibly so learning remains responsive to each child’s needs, interests, and readiness.

Children build strong foundations in reading, writing, and math while also developing problem-solving skills, creativity, independence, and confidence.

Nature at the Heart of Wilder

Nature anchors our approach.

Time outdoors isn’t an add-on—it’s central to how children learn and grow here. Nature offers endless opportunities to explore, question, and understand the world. It supports regulation, resilience, and a sense of belonging that children carry into all areas of learning.

Through daily time outside in all seasons, children come to understand themselves in relation to their environment, their community, and the wider world.

A Nonprofit School with a Purpose

As a nonprofit organization, Wilder Learning exists to serve children and families—not shareholders.

Tuition and community support go directly back into the school, helping us keep class sizes small, invest in educators, and maintain a learning environment that reflects our values.

Our Story

Wilder Learning was created in response to a growing need we kept seeing: children who were capable, curious, and thoughtful, but struggling in environments that moved too fast or asked them to fit a system that didn’t fit them.

Families were looking for something different. More time outdoors. Smaller groups. Learning that respected childhood and development. A place where children could build confidence without pressure.

Wilder was built to be that place.
